The St. Petersburg Summit on Biomass and Biofuels, St. Petersburg, Russia, (LENEXPO, 8-10 April 2008) has confirmed that key guest speakers from Argentina and Brazil will attend the Summit and will address the audience on latest developments in agro and biomass for biofuels in Argentina and Brazil, including production of ethanol based on lignocellulosics. South American countries are increasingly interested in establishing business relations with Russian Federation member states in the fields of renewable energy and agro.

The 2nd International Summit & Expo on sustainable biofuels will take place in St. Petersburg, Russia, from 8-10 of April 2008. The Summit and Expo will take place in the wider context of the 9th International Oil & Gas Expo and Congress (www.biofuelsummit.info)

Russian key speakers from government (DUMA), agro industry, science, transformer field as well as the oil and gas industry, will address for the first time in history the Russian policy on renewable energy and especially on biomass for biofuels developments, including investment policy and export policy. Russia is one of the best options when it comes down on available agro land for biofuels (over 20 million hectares of usable landmass) as well as forest mass.

The three day programme will concentrate on the Russian situation and try to give a coherent overview of the investment and production options in Russia.

Official key speakers come from The Ministry of Agriculture, the State DUMA of the Russian Federation, The National Biofuels Association of Russia, the Russian Ministry of Energy, Ministry of Economy, the European Bank of Reconstruction, the Russian State agrarian university, Russian Biodiesel Center and., the Russian Grain Union. Industry speakers come from international leading companies like Syngenta, Acciona, IBG-Montforts, Axens IPF or Petrobras. Also local Russian technology and machinery providers will be speaking.

South American speakers

Interesting detail of this SUMMIT is the presence of key speakers from both Argentinean and Brazilian Government and industry who will address specially the Russian audience. Both Argentina and Brazil are world leaders in agro industry and biofuels industry and therefore have lots of experience, technology and knowledge to offer to countries like Russia who are standing on the beginning of their renewable energy developments.

Or as Mr. Miguel Almada, one of the key speakers and responsible government representative for Biofuels developments from Argentina says: “Argentina is one of the most developed countries in the world when it comes down on agro industry. Argentina is also one of the leaders worldwide in agro exports and now quickly developing its own biofuels industry. We feel that we have a lot of knowledge and experience to offer to countries like Russia who are looking to improve agricultural development in general and biomass developments in particular. On the other hand, we believe that Russia can help a lot to develop a country like Argentina.”

Petrobras top manager and key speaker Mr. Mozart Schmitt de Queiróz sees it the same way: “Brazil and Petrobras has a long year track record of biofuel developments and production, especially in ethanol and we are studying at this moment further developments with second generation lignocellulosics. As Russia is starting now, they have great opportunities to make leap’s and avoid hurdles we had to take over the last decennia. I think we can be helpful with that.”

The 2nd International Sustainable Biofuels Summit & EXPO in St. Petersburg will be followed by the 3d Summit which will take place from 22-24 of April 2008 in Madrid, Spain. The 4th Summit & Expo on Biofuels is scheduled for 22.24 of October 2008 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
